Home Safe Home
Fire safety begins at home. Is your home safe from fire? Most of us like to think so, but each year
most fire fatalities occur at home. Vista Fire Department suggests that
you take a few moments to check some areas of your house for fire hazards:
Kitchens:
- Turn pot handles so that the pots cannot be knocked over or pulled
down by small children!
- Don't leave the kitchen while the stove or oven is in use. Many home
fires start this way.
- Don't wear loose fitting clothing while cooking.
- Keep surfaces clean and free of grease.
- If you have a grease fire, put a lid over it! Using water will
only spread the fire.
Basement, Garage and Storage Areas:
- Keep gasoline, kerosene, and other flammable liquids outside the home,
and well away from Water Heaters and other heating equipment!
Fumes from flammable liquids spilled by children can
travel across floors and ignite when they contact a
heating source!
- Have furnaces, fire places and wood burning stoves inspected by a
professional before each heating season. Having your chimney swept
regularly can prevent a costly and dangerous chimney fire.
Living Areas:
- Don't place halogen floor lamps near curtains or windows. Curtains
blown into halogen lamps can catch fire.
- Eliminate overloaded electrical outlets by unplugging appliances when
not in use.
- Reduce the number and length of extension cords, use shorter cords
whenever possible.
- Use a metal screen in front of fireplaces.
- Leave space around TV and stereo equipment to prevent overheating.
- Have large, deep ashtrays for smokers, and make sure that smoking
materials are completely extinguished before disposal.
Bedrooms:
- Make a firm rule that nobody may smoke in bed!
- Install working smoke detectors outside each sleeping area. If you
sleep with the door closed, install one in your room. Test all
detectors monthly, and replace the batteries annually!
(Do it when you set your clocks back each Fall!)
Whole House:
- Keep papers, rags, and other flammable materials well away
from heating appliances.
- Keep matches and lighters stored where children cannot find them.
- Don't let papers or trash accumulate.
- Unplug appliances when not in use.
It only takes a minute to check your home for fire hazards. Set a time
to regularly check your home. You could be preventing a fire and possibly
saving the life of your family members!
