This Sunday morning, we held a 'Firefighter Skills Class' and driver training for members working towards becoming Apparatus Drivers on Engine 141.
The "Firefighter Skills Class" focused on V.E.I.S (Vent, Enter, Isolate, and Search). During the training, firefighters practiced critical techniques such as proper ventilation to control smoke and heat, as well as safe entry methods for navigating through potentially hazardous environments. Emphasis was placed on isolating areas to prevent the fire from spreading while simultaneously searching for any victims who may be trapped. This hands-on approach allowed participants to hone their skills in real-world scenarios, building confidence and preparedness. This training is not only essential for those enrolled in the Firefighter I program but also helps seasoned firefighters maintain and refine their skills for greater safety and effectiveness.
The Driver Training program is how Vista Fire Department personnel are trained and cleared to operate Fire and EMS apparatus. Members complete several hours of "drive time" behind the wheel of each vehicle before being approved as drivers. The training includes an equipment overview of all apparatus and instruction on operating the pump panel for the fire engines. The program starts with members learning to drive the ambulances, followed by Engine 142, Engine 143, Engine 141, and Tanker 4.
