| This Sunday morning, the Vista Fire Department conducted a Firefighter Skills Class.
The Firefighter Skills Class focused on Task Oriented Air Consumption (TOAC), a critical component of firefighter survival and operational effectiveness. TOAC is a practical training method used to measure how efficiently a firefighter uses air from their SCBA while performing realistic fireground tasks such as advancing hose lines, searching for victims, and forcing entry, helping members understand their personal air consumption under stress and physical exertion. This training is important because it reinforces air management awareness, ensuring firefighters know how long they can safely operate in an IDLH (Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health) environment before needing to exit, while also building confidence, improving decision-making under pressure, and enhancing overall fireground safety. This training not only equips our firefighters with the foundational knowledge needed for success in the Firefighter I program, but also helps those who have already completed Firefighter I to maintain and refine their skills.
