| On May 30th, 2026, during the Vista Fire Department’s Annual Inspection Dinner, Firefighter Phil Wanderman was awarded the Department’s highest honor, the Medal of Valor, in recognition of his extraordinary bravery and selfless actions at a multiple-alarm structure fire in South Salem on April 16th, 2026.
Firefighter Wanderman was among the first to arrive on scene, as he was already in close proximity at the time of dispatch. Although dressed in civilian clothing, he was immediately confronted with a heavily involved structure fire with reports of occupants trapped inside. Without hesitation, he acted decisively in extremely dangerous and rapidly deteriorating conditions.
Drawing upon his training and experience, Firefighter Wanderman recognized the severity of the situation and took swift action to remove individuals from immediate danger, ultimately preventing further exposure to life-threatening fire conditions. Within moments of these actions, fire conditions intensified significantly at the point of entry, underscoring the critical timing of his intervention.
He then continued to assist fire personnel on scene, helping to advance hoselines and operate in hazardous conditions to suppress the fire and support ongoing rescue efforts. His actions contributed to improving conditions for firefighters operating inside the structure and helped protect those working in close proximity to the fire.
As a result of his efforts, Firefighter Wanderman sustained smoke inhalation injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated and later released.
It is the firm belief of the Vista Fire Department that Firefighter Wanderman’s actions directly saved lives and significantly enhanced the safety of those operating at the scene. His courage, quick decision-making, and unwavering commitment to others exemplify the highest traditions of the fire service.
The Vista Fire Department proudly recognizes Firefighter Phil Wanderman with the Medal of Valor and commends him for his outstanding service, bravery, and dedication to protecting the community and his fellow first responders. |
