| On Wednesday evening, August 12th, the Westchester County Department of Emergency Services held its Firefighter I Graduation Ceremony at the Westchester County Fire Training Center in Valhalla, New York, recognizing graduates from Firefighter I classes held throughout 2025 and 2026.
Representing the Vista Fire Department at the ceremony was Probationary Firefighter/EMT Candidate Hanna Zhao, who was recognized for successfully completing her Firefighter I training.
We would also like to recognize Firefighter David Fignar, Firefighter/EMT Ashtin Rama, and Firefighter Cameron Downey, who also successfully completed Firefighter I training this year but were unable to attend the graduation ceremony.
Firefighter I is an extensive training program conducted at the Westchester County Fire Training Center that prepares new firefighters for both exterior and interior structural firefighting operations. The program includes Basic Exterior Firefighting Operations with Hazardous Materials First Responder Operations, SCBA/Interior Firefighting Operations, and Firefighter Survival training.
Throughout their training, students receive extensive classroom and hands-on instruction in areas including personal protective equipment and SCBA, fire behavior, building construction, ground ladders, forcible entry, ventilation, water supply, hose and fire streams, search and victim removal, interior fire attack, firefighter survival and self-rescue, Mayday procedures, and coordinated fireground operations.
Completing Firefighter I represents a significant commitment of time, effort, and dedication to becoming a trained interior firefighter and serving the community.
The Vista Fire Department proudly congratulates Probationary Firefighter/EMT Candidate Hanna Zhao, Firefighter David Fignar, Firefighter/EMT Ashtin Rama, and Firefighter Cameron Downey on this accomplishment. We thank each of them for the many hours they dedicated to their training and for their continued commitment to the Vista Fire Department and the community we serve.
