The Vista Fire Department proudly congratulates Firefighter/EMT Hanna Zhao on successfully completing her EMT-Basic class and earning certification as an Emergency Medical Technician!

Becoming an EMT requires a significant commitment to both classroom education and hands-on training. EMT courses in New York State typically consist of approximately 150 to 180 hours of instruction designed to prepare students to assess patients, recognize life-threatening emergencies, provide immediate medical care, and safely prepare patients for transportation to the hospital.

Throughout the EMT-Basic program, students develop the knowledge and practical skills necessary to respond to a wide variety of medical and traumatic emergencies, including:

-- Patient assessment and vital signs
-- Airway management and respiratory emergencies
-- CPR and cardiac emergencies
-- Strokes and seizures
-- Allergic reactions and diabetic emergencies
-- Bleeding, shock, fractures, and other traumatic injuries
-- Childbirth and obstetric emergencies
-- Pediatric and geriatric emergencies
-- Patient lifting, moving, and transportation
-- EMS operations and emergency scene management

Students must combine what they learn in the classroom with hands-on skills and scenario-based training, preparing them to make critical decisions and provide care when someone in the community is experiencing a medical emergency.

Firefighter/EMT Zhao's completion of the EMT-Basic program represents another important milestone in her training with the Vista Fire Department and strengthens her ability to serve our community as both a firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician.

All training is provided free of charge to Vista Fire Department members, and we are always looking for new volunteers!
